J.K. Rowling’s 2008 Harvard Commencement Speech
Good afternoon, everyone.
It is an honor to be here today. I have always believed that the most important thing about a university is not just the education it provides, but the people you meet and the experiences you gain.
I was asked to speak today about failure. But I don’t think I am qualified to talk about failure. I have never been particularly good at it. I have failed in many ways — financially, emotionally, and personally. But I have also learned from those failures. And I believe that failure can be a powerful teacher.
There is a difference between being defeated and being beaten. The first is a temporary state; the second is a permanent condition. I have been defeated many times, but I have never been beaten.
I want to tell you something that I have often said: “Nothing in life is so exhilarating as to be able to do what you love.” But I also know that the road to doing what you love is often long and difficult. It requires courage, perseverance, and sometimes, a lot of patience.
The world we live in is full of challenges. There are problems that seem too big to solve, and there are people who feel powerless to change them. But I believe that each one of us has the power to make a difference. We may not be able to change the entire world, but we can change our own lives — and in doing so, we can inspire others to do the same.
I also want to talk about imagination. Imagination is not just for children or for writers. It is a vital part of our human experience. It allows us to see beyond the present, to dream of a better future, and to create solutions to the problems we face.
Finally, I want to talk about happiness. Happiness is not something that can be bought or sold. It is something that comes from within. It is found in the small moments of life — in the laughter of friends, in the warmth of a home, in the quiet joy of a book.
So, as you leave this university and step into the world, I hope you will remember these things: that failure is not the end, that imagination is a powerful tool, and that true happiness comes from within.
Thank you, and congratulations on your graduation.
